Seeking therapy can feel intimidating or scary, but I am here to facilitate a safe, holding environment to help make your therapy an empowering and enlightening experience. Therapy is a collaborative process which is lead by you and supported by me, and we work together towards greater awareness and clarity in order to facilitate change. Therapy provides a space in which we can think about how and why we relate in certain ways to people and events.
My therapy is:
You will never be slut-shamed, fat-shamed or kink-shamed in our therapeutic relationship - I believe in encouraging and supporting my clients to live life according to their own needs, desires and interests, regardless of the judgement of society. Difference and diversity are beautiful things to be nurtured.
What is counselling/psychotherapy?
Therapy provides a safe, confidential setting in which we can explore whatever the client feels they want to explore, whether that be issues around loss, difficulties in relationships including romantic or familial, feelings of sadness or depression, or maybe to help make a decision. Some clients use it to gain self awareness, some to bring about change in their life with a supportive environment in which to reflect and voice fears, and some may wish to resolve specific issues.
Therapy does not judge or blame the client or people in their life for any issues; it provides an accepting, warm, supportive environment.
Who do you work with?
I do one-to-one therapy with adult individuals only; I do not work with children, couples or other relationship configurations.
I work with individual adult clients who are gay, straight, bi, pan, queer, asexual and questioning, and with all genders, including trans, non-binary, genderqueer, cis and agender people. I also work with clients who may find it difficult to access mainstream therapy, including people who are kinky, non-monogamous and polyamorous people, activists, people who have political beliefs outside of the mainstream, sex workers, and people who have alternative belief systems or spiritual practices such as Pagan, Wicca, astrology, and tarot.
What approach do you use?
I use an integrative approach with an emphasis on psychodynamic. The integrative approach integrates methods from different approaches which enables me to tailor the therapy for each client's individual needs. Psychodynamic therapy focuses on bringing the unconscious into consciousness to enable to the client to become more aware of their attitudes, thought processes and feelings, and how they affect their life and relationships. This can help identify the origin of unwanted thought patterns and behaviours, which enables us to collaborate on replacing these with healthier thinking.
Which issues do you work with?
I have experience of working with various issues including but not limited to:
How experienced are you?
I have been working with clients for 10 years during which time I have facilitated over 6000 sessions.
When should I expect to feel better?
It's not possible to predict when you might start to feel better; for many there comes a relief with having a regular weekly space in which they can express their feelings and work through their issues, however depending on the nature of your issues it can take a little time to start to feel significantly better. Sometimes people feel worse before they feel better, as they expose and work through difficult subjects, but the therapy holds and supports them through this period.
What commitment is required from me?
When you commit to therapy you undertake a commitment to develop a therapeutic relationship, which includes attending a session at the same time each week, usually for a minimum of three months. You will need to make space in your life to ensure that you can attend each week - cancelled sessions are charged at 50% if you provide 48 hours notice or 100% if you provide less than 48 hours notice.
Ethical guidelines and confidentiality
I adhere to the NCS Code of Ethics, a link to which can be found in the Information section. Everything discussed in our sessions is confidential, and this shall be discussed further in the consultation session.
My therapy is:
- feminist
- queer-affirmative
- body positive/neutral
- sex positive
- aware and critical of systems of oppression such as white supremacy, capitalism,
heteronormativity, and patriarchy - adaptable and consent basic
- respectful and adaptive around neurodivergence
- respectful of non-mainstream beliefs and practices such as Wicca, Paganism and Astrology.
